Revel in the Ancient Cultures of Taiwan

Experience Taiwan’s well-preserved past as you spend a day in the mountainside indigenous village of Wulai — enjoy a scenic miniature train ride, cake making and more!

About Your Trip

Discover the fascinating culture and customs of Taiwanese aboriginals when you journey south from Taipei across a landscape of mountains, forests, valleys, waterfalls and hot springs to Wulai. It’s in this village that an Atayal tribe has made its home by cultivating the land, creating handicrafts and delighting in song and dance. Once Taiwan’s fearsome headhunters and warriors, these indigenous people now live in harmony in communities that preserve their rich heritage.

After watching an interesting cultural show performed by local members of the Atayal tribe, learn more at Wulai Atayal Museum. To pique your curiosity even more, you’ll take a sightseeing tour of the village via motorized miniature train. Then, stroll Wulai Old Street, considered to be one of Taiwan’s most famous old streets. It’s full of open-air markets, stalls selling Atayal-inspired food and souvenir shops. End your day with a workshop making a type of Taiwanese cake that’s supposed to bring good luck and prosperity to those who eat it.

Up for more sightseeing? You’ll have ample leisure time on Day 3 to further explore Taipei at your own pace! Treat yourself to prime shopping at the Taipei 101 Mall, a luxurious retail center adjoining one of the tallest buildings in the world, Taipei 101 Observatory. Other landmarks include Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, National Revolutionary Martyrs’ Shrine and National Palace Museum. If you have the energy, hike up Elephant Mountain at dusk for a picture-perfect sunset.

What we love:
• All you want to know about these early inhabitants of the island is at the Wulai Atayal Museum — be sure to snap a pic of the interesting profile of an Atayal tribesperson’s face above the entrance door.
• Don’t be nervous to try something new while in Wulai — Atayal-style food comprises distinctive ingredients such as roasted wild boar, rice inside bamboo shoots and fish seasoned in ground maqaw seeds.
• Escape the crowds and take a break in Nanxing Park, near your hotel, with tranquil gardens, paved pathways and kids’ playground.
